Why All The Buzz about Organic Kombucha Tea?

Organic Defined

Do you seek out organic products? Do you know what the USDA organic label really means? It’s more than a buzzword or even a movement. Organic is a differentiator that may have significant implications to our health and the environment.

It’s easy to get confused with all of the labels on our products these days. Organic is often just one of many terms we have to decipher. So, what does it mean when a label says a product is organic?

According to the USDA, “USDA-certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent.”

When a plant-based product is labeled as organic, you can rest assured it has been grown in soil without any prohibited substances for at least three years prior to harvest. That means your food or beverage contains no ingredients that came into contact with most synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. For multi-ingredient products, such as organic kombucha tea, the same applies, however, the organic label also means the product does not contain artificial preservatives, colors or flavors. The only non-organic ingredients allowed are elements such as bacteria cultures.

Kombucha Organic Tea

When it comes to kombucha, organic goes beyond the fruits and botanicals used to flavor the fermented tea. It includes the tea leaves as well. Organic tea leaves make for a healthier kombucha because they’re certified to be free from synthetic chemicals, but that’s not all. Farmers who use organic growing methods keep those harmful chemicals from polluting the soil and the groundwater that travels to other land and water masses. The organic growing process also requires more responsible and sustainable farming practices, such as crop rotation versus deforestation.

Brew Dr. Kombucha was born from Townshend’s Tea Company, a tea company that views organic tea growing practices as fundamental to our values. We believe organic is the only way to deliver the highest-quality kombucha available while also saving the planet and the farmers who grow the tea. While our fans may not know the lengths we go to earn the USDA certified organic label, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
