We're Proud to be B Corp Certified

March is B Corp month! Brew Dr. is proud to be the first major kombucha company to become B Corp Certified. Let's take a look #behindtheb and dive deeper into what Brew Dr. stands for.

WHAT IS A B CORP?

Unlike traditional companies, Certified B Corporations are on a mission to do business better, meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

The process to become a Certified B Corporation requires completion of the rigorous B Impact Assessment. This evaluates a company’s impact on its workers, community, environment, and customers. It shows companies the areas in which they excel and provides a roadmap for continuous improvement.

The threshold to become a Certified B Corporation is 80 points. Brew Dr.’s most recent score is 95, and we are dedicated to continually making this number grow!

Today, there are over 3,700 Certified B Corporations around the globe, including New Seasons Market, Miir, Ben & Jerry’s, and Patagonia, to name a few. You can find an inclusive list of B Corps here.

GOOD FOR PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND THE PLANET

At Brew Dr., we’re proud to focus our efforts on sustainability innovation and community giveback. Here are some of our commitments:

Waste Reduction and Carbon Neutral Operations

We actively work to reduce our waste and the emissions coming from our facilities and vehicles. We measure and offset all of our scope 1 and 2 emissions, and have committed to offsetting scope 3 emissions by 2030!

In addition to carbon neutral operations, our brewing facilities utilize:

  • Water recirculation kits that reduce our water usage by over 150,000 gallons per year
  • A custom HVAC system that captures and repurposes unwanted heat from working areas
  • A gentle process for extracting alcohol from our kombucha, which is then repurposed into bio fuel — About 50,000 gallons each year!

Community Giveback

We are proud to offer "Local Love," a paid volunteer day program for our employees. This B Corp Month, we have set a goal for 100 hours of service in March! We've  also teamed up with fellow B Corp Patagonia for a Day of Service later this month.

In 2021, Brew Dr. donated over $60,000 to environmental and social justice nonprofits. Recent partners include the Black Futures FarmMudbone Grown, and ECO (Ecology in Classrooms & Outdoors.) These are local organizations that work to sustain and improve our planet and community.

Love Wins

Since 2018, Brew Dr. has partnered with the Trevor Project, releasing limited-edition "LOVE Wins" bottles and cans of our Love kombucha in support of Pride Month each year. Trevor is the world’s largest provider of crisis services for LGBTQ youth. In addition to spreading awareness through the vibrant packaging, our total contribution of $90,000 has help ed serve thousands of LGBTQ youth with free and confidential crisis counseling.

People First

We recently raised our minimum starting wage to be in line with the MIT Living Wage Calculator. We also utilize employee-led “B-hives” in decision-making: interviewing potential board members, selecting non-profit partners, and evaluating employee programs and benefits.

At Brew Dr., we believe in using business as a force for good, making decisions based on the belief that people and planet are just as important as profit. We’re honored and excited to be a B Corp!
