Tell us a bit about yourself!

I am a 25-year-old Black woman living in Portland, Oregon with my boyfriend and our two dogs. I was recently hired full-time at The Beauty Shop design agency as a junior designer and social media manager. I use my art to express myself and promote social justice.

You own your own design studio - tell us about that!

My design studio is only me for now, but it is my intention for it to become a small studio that employs a range of BIPoC/LGBTQIA women. I want to be a leader in the design industry, and use my position to uplift the Black community and build generational wealth.

How long have you been an artist?

My entire life. There’s never been a time that I wasn’t drawing or coloring or writing.

What inspires you to create?

My culture and my spirituality inspire me and allow me to create.

How would you describe your art style?

It’s just my style. I don’t think I have a specific “style” because I don't make the same things every time. I guess you could say, for that reason, that my style is fluid. My style is water.

Do you have any life mottos, or advice to give to other aspiring artists/creators?

Always listen to your intuition. Your higher-self is more powerful than you can even imagine and is there to guide you, so let it.

Tell us about a favorite piece of art or project you’ve created.

I have a set of illustrations that I made that I really love. They depict Black women and each one has a different affirmation above the subject: “Love Black Women”, “Protect Black Women”, and “Respect Black Women”.

Where did you gather inspiration for the Pineapple Guava Artwork?

My inspiration came directly from nature and the ingredients. I wanted to use colors that were highly saturated to give the consumer a sense of juiciness. I really wanted to use a graphic style to depict the fruit and make the consumer thirsty for some delicious, succulent guava!

Take us through the process of creating the Pineapple Guava label - how was your experience?

It was a pretty straightforward process. I presented the Brew Dr team with a grayscale digital sketch and then I refined that initial sketch until we reached a final product! It was actually a very quick and fun project.

What emotions/experiences do you feel when you see your artwork published?

It’s very exciting and rewarding. As a designer, you mostly see your art in digital form on the web or pre-print, so it’s really great when you have a tangible product that you can touch and it’s real. I get excited every time I get a chance to make this kind of art even if it’s just stickers or a tee shirt, it’s fun to see how other people interact with my art. I’m super excited for my kombucha flavor to be nationwide, and also eager to see how it creates more opportunities for me in the future!

Anything else you would like to add?

I am just very thankful and humbled by this opportunity and I hope to do more projects like this soon. Also, it is important to remember and center ALL Black Lives Matter.
